The “Great Resignation” is a term used to describe the mass exodus of employees from the workforce, which started at the end of 2020.
Almost 48 million Americans voluntarily quit their jobs in 2021. To put it into perspective, that’s nearly 6 million more than it was in 2019. While some thought this was a temporary side effect of the pandemic, the ongoing data seems to say otherwise.
Even executives are quitting. Research shows around 70% of high-level executives are seriously considering leaving their jobs in order to improve their mental well-being.
Since the onset of the pandemic in 2020, mental health rates have been on the decline. In the first year of the pandemic, the World Health Organization found global prevalence of anxiety and depression increased by 25%.
When it comes to employees specifically, 84% said they experienced at least one mental health challenge over the past year. To top it off, a neuer Bericht shows the number of employees who feel their employer cares about their well-being is at the lowest it’s been in nearly a decade.
The Great Resignation is not the only negative workplace trend to come about since the pandemic, though. A new trend called “quiet quitting” has recently taken over social media.
Quiet quitting is a term used by some young professionals to describe doing only the bare minimum at their jobs. The employees participating in this trend are disengaged, burnt out, and looking to make a change for their mental and physical well-being.
Both the Great Resignation and quiet quitting are trends that represent an outward expression of how employees have been feeling on the inside.
Putting a stop to the resignation rates lies in the hands of corporations.
Luckily, research shows organizations are beginning to come to terms with the need for mental health resources in the workplace. When surveyed, 92% of benefits leaders said providing mental health support for their people became a higher priority for their company in 2021.
Employees might be starting to see the efforts.
According to the American Psychological Association, 71% of employees believe their employer is more concerned about the mental health of employees now than they were in the past.
Workplace well-being initiatives are starting to become the new normal, and some employees won’t accept a job without it. In fact, 81% of workers said they will be looking for workplaces that support mental health when they seek future job opportunities.
