How Self Help Africa Ran 20k Miles with their Virtual Race!

juni 23, 2021 |

The pandemic has hit farmers in Africa hard and has put many obstacles in its path. This has affected their economy, education, and healthcare negatively. So, to help them, the Self Help Africa Foundation partnered with teroGO to create a virtual race and make this possible. The 191 participants had an array of activities, including walking, running, biking, hiking, swimming, and much more. They also raised $15,000 in ticket sales, additional donations, and peer-to-peer fundraising.

A simple format

Through a custom registration page, supporters from all over the world purchased a ticket to participate in the Walk to Africa virtual race and log unique activities like horseback riding, rowing, roller skating, and kayaking. On April 1st, the goal was simple: reach 7,657 miles, the distance from Manhattan to Malawi.

About Self Help Africa

Self Help Africa is a nonprofit organization dedicated to lifting millions of people across rural Africa out of poverty by increasing the profitability of their small farms.

They have helped improve the lives of several countries, improve farming, increase food security, and the farmer’s markets. Additionally, they fight against climate change and help parts of Africa financially.

Walking to Africa

The goal was to reach 7,657 miles between April 1st and May 31st. Yet, during this time, the participants achieved 19,614.02 miles, almost the distance around the world. They hit over 2.5 times what the goal was. The amount of engagement was outstanding, with 191 participants sharing 375 selfies, 1,473 high fives, 4,526 activities logged, and $15,000 raised in total. This means participants had the opportunity to create their own fundraising page to ask family and friends for extra donations. There were additional funds raised with tickets as well.

teroGO engaged the worldwide community with an easy-to-use mobile app to encourage and communicate. 191, from 9 different countries, people bought tickets, which directly helped the Foundation. It helped continue its duty to support female farmers in combating the impacts of COVID and growing agribusiness. Participants also had the opportunity to enter a raffle to win exciting prizes, including an Apple Watch 3 Series.

To add on, the Walk to Africa virtual race had great sponsors that made this possible, including Ambac Financial Group, Riverside, and Debevoise & Plimpton LLP.

Kerry McGlade, VP of Business Development from Self Help Africa, U.S., said, “The teroGO Challenge helped us to create a unique fundraising campaign while simultaneously engaging and expanding our community. It allowed me to get my board members involved at a level I did not expect!” It is clear that teroGO helped make all this possible during COVID, and you can engage your community with teroGO too.
