UNRWA USA linked up with atlasGO in September to invite its sweaty changemakers around the globe to virtually join the Relay Run for Refugees (September 20-25). By doing so, we want to amplify the fundraising and advocacy efforts of the Right to Movement Palestine runners, who are embarking on a 250-mile 5-day relay. This relay starts at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in NYC and down to the steps of the US Capitol building in Washington DC.
UNRWA USA is a nonprofit that aims to promote a life of dignity and human development for Palestine refugees. We do it by informing the American public about UNRWA’s work and generating support for its programs in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank (including East Jerusalem), Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. We are dedicated to showing Palestine refugees that Americans care.
Inspired by the Gaza marathon, for the last 8 years, UNRWA USA has offered running events as an active, healthy way of engaging in its mission. Running in a UNRWA USA event, whether it be 3.1 miles for its annual Gaza 5K walk/runs around the country, or 250 miles down the East Coast for the historic Relay Run for Refugees, allows individuals a fun and healthy challenge to raise money and awareness for a cause. Because we can’t be everywhere, a virtual race allows runners to participate from wherever they are and on their own time. We’re excited to see how many of you join us for this month’s challenge.
“Runners and refugees from Palestine are relaying from NYC to DC, 250 miles across 5 days, to deliver the powerful message that UNRWA needs America’s investment, and we’re asking Americans to join us along the way. We know that Americans across the country support UNRWA’s humanitarian work for Palestine refugees, so if you aren’t able to make it to our East Coast activities, becoming a virtual runner allows you to show your support, no matter where you are. Come (virtually) run with us!” -Abby Smardon, Executive Director
